books I've read, books I've written

the Seeker

I am a seeker of spiritual truth. A reluctant seeker of spiritual truth.

My journey began at the beginning as so many do. It started with a paperback book by a well known actress whose movies I was familiar with. The first spiritually based book that was loaned to me in the 1990’s (that I eventually bought and reread) was Shirley Maclaine’s book ‘Out on a Limb’.  I have written before about how the idea of reading this book freaked me out.  It turned out it was an important lesson for me. It put me on a spiritual path that was to be followed by so many others including books by authors Edgar Cayce and Dr.  Brian Weiss.

A turning point on my journey was ‘DaVinci Code’ by Dan Brown. The wildly successful novel was a thrill a minute. (No, this isn’t a review) What this book did for me was send me on a research binge of everything Mary Magdalene. I wanted, no,  needed to know everything about her. I unlearned everything I had learned about her when I was younger in Sunday school and church. I am curious. I want to know and understand. Spiritually and historically DaVinci Code checked both boxes.

Meanwhile,  I was attending workshops and still reading non-fiction books  There are too many to mention here; some are still on my bookshelves and others were donated simply because I outgrew them, DaVinci Code among them. I got out of them what I needed. The student moves on to the next lesson.

After several years in the classroom, as I call it, reading books and attending workshops, I knew I needed a break from stuffing my head with metaphysical realities and historical knowledge.

I expanded my reading to fiction that satisfied my new interests in  magic, time travel, past lives and divination, willingly being led  down a rabbit hole to learn more about esoteric things that were spellbinding!

Someone told me about a book that they read and it looked like it could be a series, she said.  That series was the ‘Found Things’ series by Paula Brackston. I love that she made this a series because it encompasses topics of magic and time travel with objects of the antique variety that could transport the main character. Stories too good not be told in one book.

I learned that I had at least one past life in Scotland because of having read ‘Outlander’. Some books or stories resonated with me.

Deborah Harkness’s ‘A Discovery of Witches’ series was pure joy! I read all three books in the series in a span of one month and then reread the series immediately. The universe has a way of connecting books to me. Three times I  saw the books, twice when two of the books were published; the first book was published in 2011 followed by the second book in the series, ‘Shadow of Night’ a year later. I felt a pull to buy them and read them but did not. Finally, the third time I saw the books was in a library. I indulged the universe and checked out the first book. Third times a charm comes to mind.  Suffice to say, I was hooked.

There is more to learn on my spiritual growth journey.  I still read some fiction  and sometimes simultaneously, a non-fiction book. There’s a need to know and like being in school there are many subjects to learn and books to learn from.
